This light summer shawl can be tied on the side around your waist and used as a beach cover-up.

How to crochet a shawl

The Barley seed shawl is made from side to side. In the beginning, it looks like a huge triangular shawl. Or even that’s going to have an asymmetrical design.

But no! Even though it’s made from one sideways, the particular stitch used in this lightweight crochet shawl forms an equilateral triangle.

Which means that you get two equal sides and a longer one. Even if you don’t care about trigonometry, the way this crochet summer shawl is made will amaze you.

There’s only one increase every other row and no decreases at all. The only thing you will have to do after you finish this simple lace shawl is to make half a turn to your right and add fringe on the shorter sides.

Crochet shawl edging

I decided that the simple stitches for this easy crochet shawl are perfect enough and no edging is needed.

The increase side creates a nice enough edging, and when you turn your piece on the right side, the increase side will sit nicely on your shoulders.

It actually hugs your shoulders in a such a perfect manner, that it doesn’t slide off easily or has a loose effect around your neck.

Only two strands of yarn are added every other row as fringe, to complete the summer boho look.

What stitch to use for a lightweight shawl

The Barley seed shawl uses open stitches with a simple half double crochet stitch and chains in between.

The beautiful effect is created by working in the back loops only for the entire project, and of course with my favorite slip stitches.

The slip stitches make it a slow and meditative project, although the half double crochet rows go by rather quickly.

Thus is created a lightweight shawl with nice open stitches and soon you’ll have a nice crochet summer shawl for your evening walks.

What yarn to use for a light summer shawl

As always, for almost every summer project, I strongly suggest cotton or cotton blend yarns.

I used a cotton and linen blend for the Barley Seed shawl, which gives it a nice structure and drape. The yarn is the Bomull-Lin from Drops and I am giving you other options to try if you can’t easily find this one.

It’s worsted weight and you will need about 560 yards (510 m) to complete it. However, due to the nature of its shape you can stop at any time you like the size and call it done.

It can be a small shawlette or a nice big summer wrap.

Crochet summer shawl pattern free – Barley seed shawl

R1 (RS): MR, ch 2, hdc, ch 2, hdc, ch 1, turn (4)
R2 (WS): in blo here and throughout the project, sl st in each st across, ch 2, turn (4)
R3: (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in first st, ch 2, sk 2 sts, hdc in last st, ch 1, turn (7)
R4: sl st in each st across, ch 2, turn (7)
R5: (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in first st, * ch 2, sk 2 sts, hdc *, repeat from * to * across, ch 1, turn (10)
R6: sl st in each st across, ch 2, turn (10)
R7-138: repeat R5 and R6. FO and weave in all your ends.

You will end up with 208 stitches in R138.

If you take a look at your shawl in the direction you are crocheting, it will look like a huge half triangle shawl.

The increases are placed at the start of each row, on the right side. This looks like the bottom of the shawl as you are making it.

When you fasten off, you will turn your project so the increase row will be on the top. It’s the side that will lie on your shoulders and it will be the width of your shawl.
