I know you are one of them because you are right here, reading this article. I have compiled a long list of marvelous crochet sweater patterns for adults with various characteristics.
From chunky crochet sweaters to hoodies, and more elegant textured ones. I even added a couple of Nordic sweater patterns, which are very rare in crochet. I hope you will get some great crochet sweater ideas and inspiration from this list.
Is there a thing like a beginner crochet sweater pattern?
Well, yes and no. In my opinion, someone who is just starting out and learning how to crochet shouldn’t start with a garment.
It’s not that garments can’t be easy enough for a beginner to make. It’s just that it takes lots of time, and effort, plus an initial startup cost to make a whole crocheted sweater.
If you are just starting I would advise you to work on the basic stitches and basic and easy crochet patterns, like scarfs, hats, and dishcloths before you dive into garment making.
Heck, you could even go for a blanket, something I always recommend to beginners because it’s the perfect way to build that muscle memory by working on the same stitches again and again.
I have a couple of blanket suggestions for you below that would be perfect for a beginner crocheter to try.

In this blanket selection we have: The lacy baby blanket, the striped blanket, and the modern granny stripe blanket.
And if you want to learn how to make your own personalized blanket I have a mini-course for you. Just click on the image below to learn more.

Back to sweater making now… If you feel you have a couple of projects under your belt, you are probably an advanced beginner who is feeling adventurous and ready to tackle a bigger project, then follow along.
You will find some easy and basic crochet sweater patterns for you in the list below.
When should I start making a crochet sweater?
The best time is late summer-early autumn if you want to have it on time to wear. But, it also depends on the time you can dedicate to this project and how fast you can crochet.
Leaving in a place with scorching hot summers and mild winters -or the opposite- will also affect the timeline of when you should start making your own crochet jumper.
Having said that, the next best time is… now.
What yarn should I use for a crochet jumper pattern?
This will also depend on a lot of other factors. Wool or acrylic are perfect for winter, but it also depends on your preferences and the pattern you are going to choose.
If you are looking for a #5 weight yarn crochet sweater pattern don’t find one that uses a #3 weight and use the yarn you have. This is going to go so bad!
Should I block my sweater after I make it?
That is a definite yes! You won’t believe the difference between blocked to unblocked garments. You could just spray it and pin it on a foam mat to dry or even wash it properly.
Be aware! Don’t use children’s foam mats to block your crochet items. Some of the bright colors tend to wash off when wet and I have heard some horror stories.
This also means that these mats shouldn’t probably be used by children, but that’s another story.
Are all crochet sweater patterns free?
No, they are not, and in my opinion, they shouldn’t be. The designers put a lot of work and effort into garment making and they should be compensated for their hard work. It sometimes takes months to make something right.
I have made this list mostly with free crochet sweater patterns but I have included a couple of paid ones. I will tell you why.
Designers who make paid crochet patterns should also get credit for their work which sometimes, is superior, better written and presented, and/ or more difficult. Of course, that’s not always the case.
Also, many makers out there prefer to print out their pdf patterns or even buy a book and work from the comfort of their favorite chair/anywhere, without being tied to an electronic device.
That’s part of the reason why I created my membership. Learn more when you click on the image below.

If you made it so far, you are an angel and a true learner at heart. I won’t keep you waiting any longer. Let’s dive into the list. Or go watch the video below, If you prefer.
