Crochet baby sleeping bag pattern

I am talking about newborns of course and their need to feel the warmth and love those first few months of their lives that everything is new and strange.
Giving birth in January in freezing temperatures, I know what it feels like. You have a new tiny baby that seems so fragile. And the days pass, and you feel a little better every day.
But the cold stays strong because it is winter. And you just have to get out of the house for a while. Do, please do! Get dressed in warm clothes, dress your baby in warmer clothes and go outside for a walk.
Even a short walk, will do wonders for your repressed feelings and overwhelm.
This is were this crochet sleeping bag enters. It is the perfect size to keep a newborn nice and snuggle, and it has a hood to protect his little head.
I suggest adding a crochet hat for extra protection. It is a newborn we are talking about after all.
But enough chatting, let’s get into the details!
You are going to need:
Chunky yarn (I used Stylecraft Special Chunky)
US M/9 mm crochet hook
Yarn needle
Scissors
6 stitch markers
6 wooden buttons about 4 cm (1 ½”)
Dimensions (when laid flat, including ribbing)
Newborn: 20″ x 38″ (50 x 96 cm)
0-3 months: 24″ x 42″ (61 x107 cm)
Gauge: 2 clusters and 4 rows is 4 inches
A cluster is a number of stitches, in our case a sc and 4 dc. It is explained in parenthesis in R2.
Yardage: 6 skeins of Stylecraft Special Chunky or about 840 m (920 yds) of any chunky yarn.
Notes:
1. The pattern is written in 2 sizes, newborn and 0-3 months, using Standard US terms.
2. The pattern is written in the newborn size with the 0-3 mo following in parenthesis.
3. You will hold 2 strands of yarn throughout the project.

Crochet baby sleeping bag pattern
R1: ch 25 (33), sc in second chain from hook and in all chains, ch 1, turn (24, 32)
R2: * (sc, ch 2, 4 dc) in first st, sk next 3 st *, repeat from * to * across, sc in last st, turn
R3: Ch 3, 4 dc in same st as the ch 3, * (sc, ch 2, 4 dc) in next ch 2space *, repeat from * to * across, sc in last ch 2space
R4-42(46): repeat R3, do not cut yarn
At the end of R42 for the newborn size, your piece will measure around 96 cm (38 “).
At the end of R46 for the 0-3 mo size your piece will measure around 107 m (42”).
Even edging
R43(47): ch 3, tr, * dc, hdc, sc 2 * repeat from * to * until the end of row and do not cut yarn.
Single crochet evenly around and remember to place 3 single crochet stitches in every corner. Do not single crochet in the top of the even edging row. Cut yarn and leave a long tail for sewing.
Sew the hood inside out as shown in the image below. This piece is reversible so, just decide which one will be the good side of the fabric.
Place stitch markers on rows 2, 8 and 13 for the newborn size, and rows 2, 8 and 14 for the 0-3 mo size, on both sides.
Ribbing
Now you will start your ribbing by attaching the yarn on the top left corner. The ribbing measures about 2″ (5 cm), on each side.
R1: ch 6, sc in second ch from hook and in next 4 chains, sl st in next 2 stitches of the single crochet row, ch 1 turn (5)
R2: sc in blo in each st across, ch 1, turn (5)
R3: sc in blo in each st across, sl st in next 2 stitches of the single crochet row, ch 1 turn (5)
R4-end: repeat rows 2 and 3

Buttonholes
When a sl st on the single crochet row hits a stitch with a stitch marker this is where you will create the buttonholes. Remove stitch markers as you go.
In such a row the pattern will be sc 2, ch 1, sk 1, sc 2, ch 1, turn.
Fold the piece right side up and place the stitch markers again exactly below the buttonholes and sew the buttons. Remove stitch markers.
That’s it! You are done! Let your baby enjoy his new crochet sleeping bag!

The hood is not separate, it’s crocheted as one piece and then sewed.
I’m a newer crocheter, is there a name for the main type of stitch here. I would love to watch a video to help me understand better.

For the most part this is a easy pattern to follow… but I do have a question….

Maybe I’m not understanding the direction but does this me…
Chain 3, turn or triple crochet?
And then….
Dc,hdc,sc 2.. does this mean DC,hdc,sc,sc all in same stitch? Or in every stitch? I’m confused on the wording….

The chain 3 is just for turning and gaining height. And then the dc, hdc, and sc 2, goes one in every stitch. Not all the stitches in one stitch. I hope it is more clear now. Usually, when a pattern calls for a lot of stitches in one stitch, all of the stitches are in parenthesis. Just a small tip… 😉

Hi I love this pattern but could you tell me is the rib made separate then sewed on after.
The ribbing is made after you complete the main part of the sleeping bag. You attach the yarn at the top left corner and you start crocheting.

I did find a small error in the ribbing. If you chain 6 and then sc in the second chain from the hook and the next 4 chains you should have 5 sc. Your stitch count says 4. The stitch count says 4 on every row for the ribbing but the button hole directions also make sense with 5 stitches. So I think it’s just a typo but could confuse someone.

I am having trouble understanding the buttonhole process. I have everything complete and love it except the buttonholes. Are we supposed to sc or slip stitch around the edging to be able to do this? Any enlightenment you have could be very helpful to me. Thanks
Yes, you are supposed to sc around the sleeping bag after the even edging row and then you create the ribbing and buttonholes. I have also sent you an email. ;-_
Hi there, I have an question about the buttonhole row. If sc2, ch1, sk1, sc2 that’s only 3 but we have 4 stitches in a ribbing row to fill …??? so it doesn’t bring me to the end of the ribbing row… Sorry but I need help.
Hello Kathy, the count on the ribbing was wrong. You will have 5 stitches in each row. It’s all fixed now and you can take a look.
Does this pattern have the slots for the car seat buckles?

Love this pattern, but my stitches seem to be a bit smaller so just wondering how wide it should measure before the ribbing is started. I started with ch 33 instead of 25 but not sure this is sufficient. Mine currently measures 29cm across. Thanks

I don’t see the bigger size in the instructions. There is supposed to be stitch count in parentheses. I would like to make it 0-3 month size.

I’ve been loving making this pattern so far but I am stuck on the sc all the way around. On the two long sides of the piece, is it simply one sc per row? The edges of my piece are looking a little stretched when I do that. I tried doing three sc for every two rows, which doesn’t make the edges of my piece look stretched; however, that is giving me more stitches to work with when doing the ribbing. Please help me understand what I am doing wrong! Thank you!

It really depends on how tight or loose you are crocheting, but, one sc per row is definitely not going to cut it. You will probably need 2-3 sc per row. See how comfortable it feels when you are making the sides. The sc shouldn’t be too close or too far apart from each other. Relax and place your hook in the place that feels more natural. The only thing that you will have to check is that both long sides should have the same number of single crochet stitches.
Hi, I am making this in size 0-3M but using a finer thread and smaller needle as it what I have on hand. I see that the final length should be 110cm but what is the final width so I can maybe add one cluster or two to adjust? Thanks

The larger size doesn’t require more than half of a skein.
