Vintage Crochet Granny Square Baby Blanket
I have mentioned quite a few times that I love baby blankets. Even before I had a baby. I love making them and I love designing them. This vintage granny square baby blanket is brought to you again in collaboration with Hobium Yarns and their La Mia Wool Easy yarn.

This time I had in hand these two different greys, and as I was trying to figure out if I had enough yarn for a baby blanket and where exactly should I make the color changes, an idea hit me. I would let the yarn decide!
Yes, you heard me right. I chose to start from the middle with one color and whenever I would run out of yarn, I would change the color. That simple!
I chose a solid granny square as my pattern because I had never tried it before and also it felt like a good idea. There would be no frogging since I would just be going around and around and stopping when I run out of yarn.
My fears of not having enough yarn for a baby blanket were put to sleep quickly. As I finished the first skein I already had 18.5 inches (47 cm), so I knew that all would be fine. I also knew that as the rounds grew bigger one skein would produce fewer and fewer rows and that would make an interesting pattern.
Finally, I got to use only 4 skeins of the La Mia Wool Easy. It is a 20% wool, 80% acrylic that works up really well and its price is just perfect! This will be one of the cheapest baby blankets you are going to make and with excellent value for money.
My only complaint is their limited color choices because I already had about 12 new blanket designs with this yarn in mind. Although I have my eye on the mustard color which is amazing!
Update 13/09/2024: It seems like this yarn is discontinued. Any worsted weight acrylic yarn will do for this blanket. And you’ll have lots of color choices, too.
You can make this blanket in any size you want. The only thing you have to do is keep adding rounds.
Just take into account that it’s always going to be a square blanket. So, going too big might not be convenient.

Notes
– All my patterns are written in Standard US terms.
– The pattern is worked in joined rounds.
– The first stitch of every round is worked in the same stitch as the slip stitch.
– This is a square blanket, which means you can make it smaller or larger by adding or subtracting rows. It will always be a square, though.

R1: MR, ch 2, * 3 dc, ch 3 * repeat from * to * 3 more times, sl st to join in the first dc.
R2: ch 2, * dc in each st until ch3-sp, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in ch3-sp *, repeat from * to * 3 more times, sl st in first dc.
R3-28: ch 2, * dc in each st until ch3-sp, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in ch3-sp *, repeat from * to * 3 more times, dc in all remaining st(s), sl st in first dc.

Border:
R29: ch 1, * sc in each st across, 3 sc in ch3-sp *, repeat from * to * around, sc in all remaining st(s), sl st in first sc.
R30-33: ch 1, * sc in blo in each st across, 3 sc in the middle sc of the ch3-sp of the previous round *, repeat from * to * around, sc in all remaining st(s) across, sl st in first sc.
Color changes:
R1-16: color A
R17-23: color B
R24-28: color A
R29-33 (border): color B
These are the color changes I made to my blanket. But, as I mentioned before, I let the yarn guide me.
If you like the result you may change your colors in the specified rounds. Or, if you feel more adventurous, you can let your yarn and colors guide you, too.
