But first, let’s start with some questions you might have…

Rustic crochet tea towels

Can you crochet a tea towel?

While, yes! This is my very first try at a crochet tea towel pattern, although I have crocheted many dishcloths for personal use in the past.

A crocheted hand towel can be as useful as any store-bought cotton towel, and they make great gifts for friends and family.

Plus, it’s an awesome stash-busting project to use up any cotton leftovers you might have.

Are crochet towels absorbent?

The short answer is, yes. They can be very absorbent if you choose the right yarn. Cotton yarn is always the best option as it can absorb up to 27 times its own weight.

Cotton blends are the next best choice, and you would like to choose one with natural fibers, like cotton and bamboo, or cotton and linen.

I would stay away from acrylic yarn for your crochet dish towels, as it absorbs water more slowly and it can create more of a mess than a clean-up.

Besides that, natural fibers are always better for skin contact, more hygienic, and they are machine washable. Never fear washing your cotton in the washing machine.

Notes:

– I have chosen to make a crochet hanging dish towel pattern. That’s the fancy term for “I made a loop to hang my towels”. Since it’s the very last thing you are going to make so you can totally omit it if you’d like.

– All my patterns are written in Standard US terms.

Loop

The hanging loop on the Avery dish towel happens to be on the right side, while on the other two towels the loop is placed on the left side.

This little detail drove me nuts, but since I hate cutting and rejoining yarn, I decided that it wasn’t worth the effort.

You can place your loop on the other side if you like. Just cut your yarn, weave in all ends, and make an afterthought loop on the same side of each towel. You do you.
