The Vasia hat, which got its name from the first recipient I ever made it for, my sister-in-law, is a quick make.

While I love big projects like crochet blankets, once in a while, a fun and quick project is all you need. Something that will give you a sense of accomplishment, since you can finish it in one sitting.

That’s what makes it perfect for small gifts. You will need less than one skein and part of your afternoon, even for the adult size.

Best yarn for a crochet chunky hat

In order to make a chunky hat you will obviously need some chunky yarn. I used a Greek brand for this one, but I am not sure if the yarn is discontinued or not. I cannot find it on their website.

It’s the Lama Tweed Wool, but don’t worry, I will have yarn alternatives for you down below.

This one is an acrylic and wool blend with a touch of viscose for the tweed flecks. It’s a nice, soft, bulky yarn, perfect for a winter beanie.

I also used an 8.00 mm crochet hook for this hat, both the ribbing and the main part, which is also a great way to speed up the process and produce a nice fluffy outcome.

Crochet hat construction

The Vasia chunky hat has an interesting construction as it’s made all in one piece, both flat and in the round. Let me explain.

You will start by making the ribbing band flat. The whole band is made with slip stitches in the back loop only, one of my favorite techniques to produce crochet ribbing.

Then you will join this strip of ribbing, with slip stitches again, turn the project inside out, and start the main part of the hat from there.

You will crochet the first round of the hat at the upper side of the ribbing. After you join your first round, the rest is easy.

Continue in pattern with no shaping, until you reach the desired number of rounds or the desired length.

The Vasia crochet chunky hat is meant to be just a little bit slouchy. It will be easier this way to sew the top of the hat but also produce a nice shape.

I wouldn’t suggest omitting more than two rounds maximum If you want to make a more fitted version.

Remember to spread out the stitches of the first round as evenly as possible. This may take a few tries at some sizes.

Crochet beanie sizes

I’ve managed to make 9 sizes for this chunky beanie from newborn to adult woman. They go up one inch at a time so the sizes that are close to each other have minimal (but enough) differences.

It’s always advised to measure one’s head before choosing a size. Especially for babies, age isn’t the best depiction of someone’s head circumference, as babies’ heads tend to vary a lot.

So, it’s best if you can measure before deciding. If you are between sizes, always go for the bigger one, as children grow.

The faux fur pom pom at the end is optional but really cute. You get to decide if you place one or not. The hat will look fine even without one. It’s up to you!

Free Crochet Chunky Hat Pattern

RIBBING

R1 (RS): ch 5 (5, 5, 5, 5) [6, 6, 7, 7], sl st in back bumps in second chain from hook and in all chs across, ch 1, turn (4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6)
R2 (WS): sl st in blo in each st across, ch 1, turn
R3-32 (34, 36, 38, 42) [46, 50, 54, 58]: repeat R2, do not fasten off at the end.

Note: The following part of the tutorial is basically the same as with my adorable crochet pumpkins. If you’d like a visual approach for this part, check it out.

Hold your project with the crochet hook still attached at the last stitch you made. Bring the bottom edge (the starting row) from the back (like folding in half), and hold them together.

This is the wrong side of your work, you will turn it inside out, eventually.

Turn your work so that the yarn tail you left, in the beginning, is in front of you. Insert the hook in the back loop of one side of the fabric and the front loop of the other side of the fabric. Yarn over and pull through all loops on your hook. Keep slip stitching all the way through. Turn your work inside out. Proceed with the main part of the hat, without cutting the yarn.

MAIN PART

You are going to crochet 32 (34, 36, 38, 40) [42, 46, 48, 50] evenly around at the side of the ribbing. Follow R1. Chain 1 before you start R1.

R1: * sc, dc * around, sl st to join, ch 1 (32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 46, 48, 50)
R2: * dc, sc * around, sl st to join, ch 1 (32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 46, 48, 50)
R3-12 (12, 13, 14, 14) [15, 15, 16, 17]: repeat R1 and R2

If you want to sew the top of your hat with your crochet hook, follow the photo tutorial below, and do not fasten off at this point. If you decide to sew with a darning needle you may cut your yarn now and follow the same instructions. Attach your pom pom at the end and you are done! Enjoy!
