The perfect yarn for an ombre scarf

As much as would love to say that these beautiful and subtle transitions of color are my work, they aren’t. It’s all about the yarn.

Featuring an ombre design in rich shades of brown and beige, this scarf mimics the gentle transition of colors found in a sunset or autumn leaves, creating a soft, sophisticated gradient.

I used the Wonderfluff yarn from We Crochet, in their solid and ombre colors to create this beautiful, cozy, ombre scarf.

The Wonderfluff is a soft blend yarn, made of 70% Baby Alpaca, 23% Nylon, and 7% Merino Wool, which makes it a dream to work with and especially to wear,

It’s as soft as a cloud and warm as a hug. You won’t regret making the Toffee Ripple with this yarn.

The stitch

Another stitch I discovered that makes a perfect crochet ribbing is the half double crochet in the third loop only. Don’t be intimidated by the long name. It’s just regular half double crochet stitches placed in a specific loop.

It’s such a lovely stitch that can produce beautiful results, both flat and in the round. And the fun part is that they look a bit different if you choose to work it one way or the other.

Let’s move on to the things you are going to need to make this ombre crochet scarf for yourself or as a gift to a loved one.

Construction

The Toffee Ripple Ombre Scarf is constructed from the bottom up, by making a long chain and then working into the chain. You can also create the first row with a foundation half double crochet if that feels more comfortable to you.

Then you chain one and turn in each row and work one half double crochet stitch in each stitch in the third loop only. A link for a photo tutorial can be found in the notes section.

If you choose to make this scarf in a solid color just ignore the row indication for changing colors and work flat.

You can easily adjust the size of this scarf by adding or subtracting stitches and rows. Four stitches is 1” (2.5 cm) if you meet the gauge, so you adjust accordingly. Just be aware that you’ll need more yarn if you make adjustments.

The ombre yarn cakes can be used from the outside of the cake or from the center (the inside). I used color B from the outside and color C from the center of the cake to produce this effect.

Plus, since the two cakes meet in the same color (white in the middle), I just used the whole cake and changed it when it ran out, without worrying if I was in the middle of the row.

Notes

– All my patterns are written in Standard US terms.
– Keep 10 grams of each Color A and Color D for fringe.
– The fabric produced is reversible.
– You can either chain of make a foundation hdc first row.
– The third loop of the hdc is located at the back of the stitch. But you work in turned rows it’s located in the front. You can see a photo tutorial of the stitch, here. Check out number 2!

Pattern notes for changing colors

The way I worked this pattern is this: 5 rows with color A. The whole skein of color B from the outside to inside, then the whole skein of color C from inside to outside, and finally 5 rows of color D. I kept what was left of colors A and D for fringe. You can choose a solid color or self-striping yarn and create your own effect if you like.

Fringe:

Cut 4 strands of yarn for each fringe and each will measure approximately 18″ (46 cm). You will need 7 fringe for each side. I have alternated the colors so I had 7 of each color, 14 in total.

Fold each one in half, and attach by grabbing with a larger crochet hook (I used a 10 mm), yarn over and pull all strands of yarn. Tighten and adjust and you are done.

Continue adding fringe in equal spacing. You may add more, less, or any if you like.
