Cute little crochet hanging basket for all your knick-knacks. Easy and quick free crochet pattern.
I don’t have a large yarn stash, I really don’t. I have never been a hoarder of anything, even things I like very much. I consider myself a minimalist and try not to own lots of stuff. That is not always easy, of course, and these days I try to get rid of things that I have since I was a child.

The past month or so, I have decided that I have owned some yarn for quite a while, and it’s about time to make something with it. It will take dedication and several projects (more patterns for you, yeah!), but I am determined to reduce the size of my yarn stash. And maybe make room for new stuff to come?
So, these small crochet hanging baskets came out of necessity again for two reasons. The first one is mentioned above, the second is that I needed a hanging basket. Well, two.
I had a smaller one that I used for my little one’s socks. It was very convenient as they tend to be tiny and get lost easily. I had it hanged in the closet beside her clothes, so it was easy to grab a pair of socks with her clothes.
Now that we are expecting a second little one (I don’t think I have mentioned this before, have I?), I needed a second hanging basket. I changed the design a bit from the original one – I have never published this pattern – and I think I like it more.
It’s a little bigger but still not too big that will not fit well into the closet. I used leftover yarn for both of them and I even frogged the old one to finish the grey basket.
I think their size and shape is ideal for small things, plus I think they are cute enough to hang in places that people will actually see them. It’s a very quick and easy project and I bet you can make it in less than an hour.
It uses super bulky yarn and a US/N 10.0 m crochet hook, so this small crochet hanging basket can be easily done in an afternoon.
Let’s see what are you going to need:
Approximately 70m (76 yds) of super bulky yarn
US N/10.0 mm crochet hook
MR: magic ring
hdc: half double crochet
sl st: slip stitch
dc2tog: double crochet 2 together (decrease)
Crochet hanging basket pattern
R1: MR, 8 hdc in ring, sl st, ch 1 (8)
R2: hdc inc in each st around, sl st, ch 1 (16)
R3: * hdc, hdc inc * repeat from * to * around, sl st, ch 1 (24)
R4: * hdc 2, hdc inc * repeat from * to * around, sl st, ch 1 (32)
R5: * hdc 3, hdc inc * repeat from * to * around, sl st, ch 1 (40)
R6-11: hdc in each st around, sl st, ch 1 (40)
R12: sl st 13, (dc2tog) x7, sl st 13, ch 8, sl st in first sl st of the round to join, ch 1, turn, 16 sc into chain loop, sl st to join.
Leave at least 25″ (63 cm) tail, cut yarn, wrap yarn around the base of the chain loop as many times as you like. Secure yarn, weave in all ends, and you are done!
How easy was that? Don’t you just want to make more? Go ahead! I find it to be a great stash-busting project. Enjoy!
