What yarn should I use for my crochet kitchen towel?
Cotton is always your best friend with these kinds of projects. It’s strong and durable, can be machine washed and it absorbs great amounts of water.
Although this time I used a cotton blend yarn which adds a touch of luxury to this textured crochet dishcloth pattern.

The yarn is called Bommul-Lin by Drops and it’s a blend of 53% cotton and 47% linen. It’s a wonderful worsted weight yarn, very suitable for this kind of project.
Suggested yarns
I know sometimes is difficult to find the same yarn someone else used so I am going to give you some alternatives.
– Dishie, by We Crochet, is a strong, durable cotton, perfect for kitchen items. They call it a workhorse.
– 24/7 cotton, by Lion Brand, is another tested yarn for your crochet washcloths and kitchen essentials in general.
What’s the difference between a crochet tea towel vs dish towel?
Well, in my opinion, I always thought of crochet tea towels as the fancier version of hand towels. They are usually more decorative in nature, with beautiful stitching, and are not always set to be used.
Think of them in a nice tray, with a large teapot, some cute little mugs, and a plate of cookies. They just belong together!

On the other hand, crochet dish towels are meant to have a place in the kitchen, drying the dishes, your hands, or even wiping down the counter.
They can also be pretty, but they must withstand the test of time and well, hard work.

What is the best stitch for a crochet dish towel?
Dish towels get a lot of use in the kitchen so use something that produces a quite thick and durable fabric.
Lacy stitches won’t be a good fit for this kind of crochet project. I went with function plus style in this one. If you can combine both of them, why not?
The stitch is a combination of half double crochet stitches and slip stitches in the back loop only, and it was love at first sight, for me.

The texture is just so beautiful and it’s one of those crochet stitches that look like knitting. Again, my favorite kind of stitches.
It produces a dense fabric, while at the same time being light-weight, stretchy, and bouncy.
Slip stitches have always had a special place in my heart and I am so happy that I am discovering new ways of using them. It’s all about the simple stitches.
This beautiful stitch pattern creates a textured ribbed effect and can look great in a solid color. I chose to make it in two colors, partly for visual pleasure, and partly because I run out of yarn. 😉
Although, the stitch pattern is very easy to learn and make I have created a short video tutorial for you if you are more of a visual learner. Have I mentioned it’s reversible?
How much yarn will I need for my crochet dish towel?
Remember when I told you that crocheted dish towels and washcloths make wonderful gifts because they don’t require much yarn?
Well, that’s not entirely true in this case. Slip stitches eat up yarn while they don’t produce much height in a project.
But, they are so perfect to look at and enjoy the texture, I never have to think twice if I should use them.
For this free crochet dish towel pattern you are going to need approximately 280 yards (255 m) of worsted weight yarn. The washcloth crochet pattern is also included in this yardage.
