Easy and full of texture crochet baby blanket pattern.

The yarn

The yarn I used for this blanket, is a fantastic, luxurious merino wool from MillaMia. It is called Naturally Soft Aran and it’s exactly that. A soft merino wool that comes in skeins of 50 grams each and it’s a lovely yarn to work with.

Merino wool is one of the finest yarns you can find with really magical properties. And if you always thought that wool is scratchy, think again. Merino wool is really soft. I loved this yarn so much that I have at least two other baby blanket designs (one knit, one crochet) planned to make with the same yarn.

The inspiration

This design was born as an idea while I was watching the “Outlander” series, once again. There is something about that show and Scotland, that inspires me tremendously. I believe many more designs will come from the same inspiration.

As I said before, it’s a very simple design, with well-known stitches, that together create lots of texture and an interesting stitch pattern. It is one of those projects that you can easily make while you read a book, listen to a podcast, or while watching your favorite show.

There is something to love about these mindless projects. There are times to challenge yourself and there are times to just sit down and relax with a nice cup of tea and crochet on.

Crochet baby blanket pattern details

The Finnegan crochet baby blanket pattern definitely falls in the second category. The pattern includes two sizes, baby and toddler. The baby size is 30” x 36” (76 x 92 cm) and the toddler size is 42” x 52” (106 x 132 cm).

If you decide to use the same yarn you will need 12 skeins for the baby size and 24 for the toddler size. I made mine with the color Cloud Grey, but there are many lovely shades you can choose from. You can find it on Lovecrafts, and they ship worldwide!

You will also need a US/I 5.50 mm crochet hook and a comfy couch because you will not want to get up.

Yarn: Worsted weight #4, Milla Mia Naturally Soft Aran, in the color Cloud Grey
Crochet hook: US I/5.50 mm

Gauge: 12 sts x 11 rows is 4″ (10 cm) in hdc

Yardage

Baby: 1040 yds (950 m), or 12 skeins
Toddler: 2055 yds (1880 m), or 24 skeins

Final size

30″ x 36″ (76 x 92 cm)
42″ x 52″ (106 x 132 cm)

– All my patterns are written in Standard US terms.
– When you make your first row of this baby blanket, keep in mind that it is the length of the blanket you are crocheting, not the width as most blankets.

Special stitches

Crab stitch (reverse single crochet)

This stitch is exactly like a single crochet stitch, but instead of crocheting from right to left (for right-handed), you crochet from left to right. This change of direction gives the stitch its shape.

R1: Fhdc 108 (or ch 109, hdc in second ch from hook and in all chs across), ch 1, turn
R2-6: hdc in each st across, ch 1, turn

In the last row, ch 2 and turn.

R7: * sk st, dc in next st, dc in skipped st in front of the previous dc * repeat from * to * across, ch 1, turn
R8-10: hdc in each st across, ch 1, turn

In the last row, ch 2 and turn.

R11: repeat R7
R12-42: hdc in each st across, ch 1, turn

In the last row, ch 2 and turn.

R43: repeat R7
R44: hdc in each st across, ch 2, turn
R45-47: repeat R43 and R44
R48-78: hdc in each st across, ch 1, turn
